there are extremely subtle elements that hint at a motivation for this extreme about-face, but why? (There’s an answer in the novel but here motives are vastly underdeveloped here).

Why are Vic’s friends so prominent and concerned early on then forgotten about entirely? Vic is retired and Melinda lives on his dime so sure, they throw parties all the time, but how does everyone else in the town have the time and why do they continue to attend parties that appear to make them uncomfortable (what with Melinda’s parade of openly flaunted men)? They like gossip? They can’t help it, like passersby near a wreck? They think it’s hot? We have to guess.Īnother question: Melinda comes to suspect Vic in her former beau’s murder (and possibly other criminal behaviors I won’t spoil), but when a new beau vanishes she’s suddenly into Vic again and exceedingly kind. Story-wise, beyond the Van Allens’ unexplained antagonistic stalemate, many other plot elements and character choices fail to make sense with what we’re given.
